Every year millions of people start the new year setting goals or trying to accomplish the goals that they set last year, the year before last, and so on and so on. Some goals are realistic while others are beyond reach.
Instead of setting new goals, consider taking this time to grow up as if you were taking baby steps to reach a level of maturity over time. Growth is about learning, developing, and advancing to show a level of progress that propels you forward to success.
Some may think that this concept is the same as goal setting, but it goes beyond that. The idea is that there will be both visible, outward changes in behavior as well as inward changes in an individual’s thoughts and perceptions. This growth is meant to be a continuous process that goes on year after year.
So, to start growing up this year:
- Grow intellectually – Expand your knowledge and perspectives by reading books, newspapers, journals, articles etc. Practice critical thinking to help you pinpoint the information that is most valuable to you.
- Grow strong relationships – Create an inner circle of supportive individuals that will give honest and constructive feedback. While staying true to your core values, try to keep an open mind when it comes to perspectives that are different from your own.
- Seek out a mentor – A mentor or coach is focused on helping you grow. Since January is National Mentor Month, now is the perfect time to start thinking of individuals who might help you in such a capacity.
- Grow as a person – Take time to nurture your mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
