In March we were springing forward to set new goals and grow. April is a month to blossom in new ways by expanding our learning. April is National Autism Month and if you know someone or have a family member, friend, or colleague that identifies as having autism, this would be a suitable time to increase your knowledge of autism and the challenges and opportunities provided to individuals with this disorder.
Personally, I have begun to research this topic since learning that my grandson has been diagnosed as being on the spectrum. I really did not know what that meant, but wanted to become aware and educated to support him and others in the community. There is a lot of data on the subject and continued research in the field of study.
Although diagnosis normally happens in the formative years (18-20 months), we may tend to forget that children become teens, teens become adults, and that autism does not disappear during the aging process. This may raise questions such as what programs and training are in place to ensure inclusivity for adults with autism? Are there companies that support employees with disorders and disabilities?
Professional development includes learning about things that are new, different, and unique. Disorders and disabilities are normally not at the top of the list for professional development, and yet these are subjects that increase awareness; and education. This expanded learning opportunity provides a higher level of understanding, advocacy, and accountability. Take the month of April to learn something new and out of your comfort zone. You will continue to blossom!
