What is your favorite Dessert? Is it ice cream? If so, you may be delighted to know that July is National Ice Cream Month. You may also be one of the 289 million people in the United States who consume over 23 pounds of ice cream a year (www.idfa.org). Californians in particular seem to have a liking for ice cream. The state takes the prize for producing the most ice cream in the United States at over 63 thousand gallons annually, based on 2019 data (www.idfa.org).
As popular as ice cream is, however, there has been a slight shift in consumer preferences as many have decided to forgo ice cream for healthier choices such as yogurt, sherbet, or refreshing fruit-filled options. Although these treats tempting, ice cream has been a favorite for centuries and is one of my main go-to desserts.
Like chocolate, ice cream makes everything better. Ice cream has an impact on us that we may not have realized. Think about it — ice cream can be used as a reward, bribe, or stress reliever. At the end of a sports event, whether the team won or not, the treat of ice cream shared by all can put huge smiles on many faces. Did you ever tell the kids, “If you clean up your room or complete your chores, an ice cream treat will be waiting for you?” What about a time when you had a bad day or a long day at work, and you came home to that special favorite bowl of ice cream. The sugary goodness helped you feel happy and relaxed.
One of my fondest memories involving ice cream was one hot summer day when, out of nowhere, our director arranged to have Ted Drewes frozen custard and a variety of ice cream delivered to the office. The morale changed in an instant! What are your fond memories of sharing ice cream with family, friends, or colleagues?
We are going through a unique and challenging time and although ice cream will soothe us, it will not minimize the day to day concerns that we ponder, such as health, family, employment, housing, etc. Due to these concerns, many of us have had to readjust and reassess our priorities. In many cases, without any advanced notice we were working from home, learning how to tutor and teach, handling caregiving duties, and becoming cooks and delivery drivers. Whatever the case, there was a shift in responsibilities and a balancing of work and family life.
As I reflect on these changes, I cannot help but notice how many of us have gone “back to the basics” in evaluating our next steps to move forward. This is exactly why I started my coaching and consulting service. I want to help individuals and companies reach their personal and professional goals. My strategy is to get you “back to the basics” to prepare you for successful growth in your endeavors. I look forward to working with you and answering any questions you may have. Join me for a Zoom chat and don’t forget to bring your favorite ice cream treat!
